S/Y Lionheart Refit - New Main Engine & Survey

Overview

I joined Lionheart almost one year ago as part of their refit engineer team of 3 and sometimes 4 engineers. Our tasks included but weren't limited to:

  • Dismantle and remove almost everything in the engine room apart from the the generator engine blocks, generators, main distribution cabling and the Hundersted & Stratoff systems.
  • Remove the rudder, shaft and prop.
  • Assist welders in welding a new tank lid on the forward ballast tank
  • Remove all thru hull valves and service
  • Service pumps
  • Reinstallation of water making, A/C compressors, Hamann water treatment system, lots of plumbing
  • Install new boilers with new plumbing
  • Interior jobs like overhauling the gimbaling system on the Galley oven to stop any rubbing / catching, fixing the break and re balancing.

During the refit I also utilised my experience with timber and resins to help the deck guys:

  • Quickly erect stable structures to aid contractors - false floors, bridges, workbenches etc...
  • Cast (in resin) a tape measure into a plywood workbench top to use as a rigging bench
  • Some small interior cabinetry jobs

Commissioning & Sole Engineer

As with all refits, there was several weeks of problem solving when everything was turned back on, my tasks included:

  • Working through electrical control systems with electrical drawings to diagnose and fix issues on the PLC system, Hamann control system, generator sump box control system, A/C compressors and tracing numerous leaks.
  • I also assisted the on rotation engineer just before the start of the season in diagnosing the Hundersted PCU having being assembled incorrectly and not allowing the prop to pitch into reverse.

After completing the refit, I had a few weeks off and then returned to cover one on the engineers in his rotation which is due to end 25th October.
